Asst. Prof. Merve Reyhan Baygeldi Ceylan from the Department of Sociology at Ibn Haldun University has published her latest article in the journal of İmgelem (TR Dizin).

We are proud to announce that Asst. Prof. Merve Reyhan Baygeldi Ceylan from the Department of Sociology at Ibn Haldun University has published her latest article, “Does Crime Hurt Differently? Female and Male Realities of Victimization in the NCVS 2023 Data” in the 18th issue of İmgelem journal (indexed in TR Dizin) in January, 2026. This study offers a comprehensive analysis of how victimization is experienced differently across genders in contemporary society.

The research utilizes data from the 2023 National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) to examine the realities of crime in the United States through the lens of Routine Activities Theory. By focusing on five interrelated dimensions—injury, offender characteristics, self-protection strategies, police response, and the aftermath of crime—Dr. Ceylan identifies significant disparities between male and female experiences. The study suggests that victimization is deeply embedded in social contexts rather than being purely incidental.

According to the findings, while women are more frequently exposed to violence within private or familiar environments, men are more likely to encounter offenders in public spaces, often involving strangers. The study also highlights a notable behavioral gap: women are more inclined to seek official help and share their experiences, whereas men tend to internalize the emotional and psychological effects. These insights underline the necessity of evaluating crime through the intersection of gender and daily routines.

We congratulate Dr. Ceylan on this significant academic contribution.
