Our Head of Department of Sociology Prof. Ramazan Aras and one of our PhD students Abdirashid Diriye Kalmoy's article titled “Politics of Emotions, Biopolitical Border Practices and the Problem of (in)Security on Turkey's Political Land Borders” was published in Borderlands Studies, a prestigious journal from the United Kingdom.
In an interdisciplinary study that examines the complex dynamics of emotions, biopolitical practices, fear and anxiety in the shaping of modern Turkey's political land borders, the authors analyze how the traumatic collapse of the Ottoman Empire continues to influence Turkey's border security policies and practices.
The study argues that borders not only symbolize the sovereign power of the state, but are also a source of fear and anxiety, especially in the context of migrant flows from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries, and underlines that these emotions play an important role in legitimizing the state's border walls, fences and strict border security measures.
As the Department of Sociology, we would like to congratulate Prof. Dr. Ramazan Aras and Abdirashid Diriye Kalmoy for this important contribution to the field of border studies and congratulate them for their outputs on critical debates on the intersection of emotions, security and border policies in Turkey.
