The article authored by our Sociology MA student Feyza Kargılı, titled “An Analysis of the Integration Processes of Immigrant Tradespeople into the Labor Market and Social Life,” has been published in the journal Migration and Political Studies.
Kargılı’s research focuses on the integration processes of Syrian migrant tradespeople living in Istanbul into the labor market and social life. Designed as a qualitative study, the research was conducted using a phenomenological approach and is based on interviews with Syrian tradespeople operating in various sectors across Istanbul.
The data, collected through semi-structured interviews, is analyzed under four main themes: spatial preferences, access to the labor market, migrant solidarity networks, and the language learning paradox. The findings demonstrate that the integration of Syrian tradespeople into the Turkish labor market contributes positively to their broader social adaptation processes. Social capital, cultural proximity, and relationships with the local population are identified as key factors in these integration processes.
On the other hand, the study also highlights several challenges faced by migrant tradespeople, such as bureaucratic obstacles, language barriers, and economic fluctuations. The research emphasizes that participation in the labor market facilitates migrants' adaptation to life in Türkiye and underlines the need to develop mechanisms that support these integration processes, drawing on the experiences of Syrian migrant tradespeople.
We congratulate our student and wish her continued success in her academic endeavors.
