2024 Talal Asad and Al-Biruni Awards Found Their Winners
The winners of the 2024 Talal Asad Award and the 2024 Al-Biruni Award at the 3rd Sociology Days Student Research Symposium have been announced.

The 3rd Sociology Days Student Research Symposium, organized by our Sociology Department, was held at Ibn Haldun University Complex on 3-5 May.

At the symposium, which witnessed intense participation, the Talal Asad and Al-Biruni Awards, given by our Sociology Department to encourage our undergraduate and graduate students in their studies, also found their owners. The awards were delivered to their owners at a ceremony held on Sunday, May 5, at the end of the symposium.

Talal Asad Award, which is in the category of the best graduate thesis, was awarded to Zahide Şeyda Karabatak, who wrote her thesis on “Changing Experiences of Marriage and Masculinity in Turkey: Turkish Men’s Transnational Marriages to Indonesian Women in the Black Sea Region” among the postgraduate theses/dissertations submitted in 2023. Karabatak was presented with her award by Prof. Charles Hirschkind.

Within the scope of this award, in which Asst. Prof. Tesnim Khriji, Asst. Prof. Diane Marie Pranzo, Dr. Arzu Ünal took part in the evaluation committee, 15.000 TL was presented to the winner of the best graduate award.

The Al-Biruni Award, which is in the category of the best undergraduate thesis, was given to Oumaru F. Sheriff, who graduated with the thesis titled "An Exploratory Study of Post-War Challenges Hindering Reintegration into Civil Society: The Case of Former Child Soldiers in Liberia" among our students who graduated in 2023 by submitting their graduation thesis. Sheriff was presented with his award by Asst. Prof. Hidayet Şefkatli Tuksal. 

Within the scope of this award, in which Asst. Prof. Tesnim Khriji, Asst. Prof. Diane Marie Pranzo, Dr. Arzu Ünal took part in the evaluation committee, 10.000 TL was presented to the student who was entitled to receive the best undergraduate thesis award.
